Prescriptions

Please read the advice below regarding short-term, acute prescriptions and repeat prescriptions.

Acute prescriptions

These are generally one-off or infrequent prescriptions which are reviewed by a doctor or pharmacist on a case-by-case basis. Examples of medications include steroid creams, benzodiazepines (diazepam, temazepam, etc) and some pain relief medications (co-codamol, tramadol, etc). Requesting these medications does not mean that they will always be prescribed. Often you will be asked to speak with a doctor or pharmacist.

To request an acute prescription please call into the surgery and complete a prescription request form.

Repeat Prescriptions

These medications are often taken on a long-term basis. Examples of these medications include blood pressure tablets, cholesterol lowering medications, inhalers and contraceptive pills. To ensure ongoing safe prescribing you will, at times, be asked to arrange a medication review with a GP or pharmacist.

There are a number of ways to order a repeat prescription:

Nominate a pharmacy

Most local pharmacies collect prescriptions daily from the surgery. Why not nominate a pharmacy and collect your medication from them directly? Speak to a member of the administrative team to arrange this or indicate clearly on your repeat prescription request.

Please remember:

  • Repeat precriptions take a minimum of 2 working days to process.
  • You may have to come in and see the doctor before certain medication is issued, so make sure you order your medication in good time.
